1. 옥중에서 정원 가꾸기

 

While I have always enjoyed gardening,/

**it was not until I was behind bars/

that I was able to tend my own garden.

I did not have many of the materials /

that the books discussed, /

but I learned / through trial and error.

A garden was one of the few things in prison/ that one could control.

To plant a seed, watch it grow, tend it, and then harvest it,

offered / a simple but enduring satisfaction.

In some ways, I saw the garden /

as a metaphor / for certain aspects of my life.

A leader must also tend his garden;/

he, too, plants seeds, tends them, and harvests the result.

Like the gardener /

he must mind his work,/

try to repel the enemies,/

preserve what can be preserved,/

and eliminate what cannot succeed.

나는 항상 정원가꾸기를 좋아했지만/

감옥에 있고 나서야/

나는 나 자신의 정원을 돌볼 수 있었다

나는 많은 재료를 갖고 있지 못했다 /

그 재료들을 책들은 언급했다 /

하지만 나는 배웠다 / 시행착오를 통해서

정원은 감옥에서 몇가지 것들중 하나이다

/ 그것을 사람(죄수)은 관리할 수 있다

씨를 뿌리고, 그것이 자라는것을 보고, 그리고 수확하는 것은/

제공한다 / 간단하지만 지속적인 만족을

어떤 면에서 / 나는 정원을 보았다 /

비유하는 것으로 / 내 삶의 어떤 특정한 측면에

지도자도 역시 정원을 돌보아야 한다

그도 역시 씨앗을 뿌리고, 돌보고, 그리고

결과를 수확해야 한다.

정원사처럼 /

그(지도자)도 그의 일에 신경쓰고,/

적을 물리치려 노력하고,/

보존될수 있는 것을 보존하고,/

성공할수 없는 것을 제거해야 한다
