핸드폰은 21세기에 들어와서 통신혁명으로 불릴 만큼 놀라울 정도의 기술발전으로 인해 오늘날 우리 생활에 없어서는 안될 필수품으로 자리잡고 있다. ‘hand phone’이라는 표현은 영어 고유의 표현이 아니고 대신에 영어에서는 ‘cell phone’, ‘cellular phone’ 또는 ‘mobile phone’이라고 표현한다. 핸드폰은 일반 전화와는 달리 자신에게만 전화가 걸려오고 또한 자신이 전화를 일부러 받지 않을 수도 있다. 그러므로 핸드폰에서 사용할 수 있는 영어 표현은 일반 전화의 영어 표현과는 달리 나름대로 고유의 표현들이 있다. 예를 들어 핸드폰에서 자주 쓰는 표현으로 컬러링(caller ring)은 영어로 ‘RBT(Ring Back Tone)’이라고 하며 ‘전화를 거는 사람이 듣는 벨 소리’를 의미하며, 그냥 전화기에서 나는 벨 소리는 ‘ring tone’이라고 한다. 그리고 ‘음성 메시지’는 ‘voice mail’, ‘발신자 표시’는 ‘caller ID’, ‘단축번호’는 ‘speed dial’이라고 말한다. 또한 문자 메시지에서 사용하는 ‘이모티콘’이란 아스키(ASCII) 문자들을 이용하여 만들어낸 감정을 표시하는 기호들로 영어의 ‘Emotion(감정)’과 ‘Icon(아이콘)’을 합쳐서 만들어진 말인데, 핸드폰은 일반 전화와는 달리 문자 메시지 기능을 가지고 있기 때문에 핸드폰에서 자주 사용하는 ‘이모티콘(Emoticon)’을 알아 두어야 한다. 다음은 핸드폰에서 사용하는 기본적인 영어 표현들과 문자 메시지에서 쓰는 줄임말(text message abbreviation)중 아주 기본적인 표현들이다.

 I'm not getting any reception on my mobile phone. 내 핸드폰은 수신이 전혀 안 돼.

 Your phone was busy when I called. 내가 너한테 전화했을 때 통화 중이었어.

핸드폰은 일반 전화와는 달리 여럿이 같이 사용하지 않고 자신의 신분(ID: identification)처럼 자신만의 고유한 전화 번호를 갖게 된다. 그래서 ‘Do you have cell phone?’나 ‘You have your cell phone, don't you?’라는 물음은 핸드폰 번호를 물어보는 간접적인 표현이 되며, 직접적으로 핸드폰 번호를 묻는 표현은 ‘Can I ask your cell phone number?’, ‘What is your cell phone number?’, 또는 ‘Would you mind if I ask your cell phone number?’라고 말한다. 직접 자신이 자신의 핸드폰 번호를 알려줄 때는 ‘Here's my cell phone number. Give me a call.’이나 ‘I'm going to let you know my number.’라고 말한다. 핸드폰 번호를 알려주고 난 뒤에 전화하라는 표현으로는 ‘Please call me on my cell phone.’ ‘You can reach me at my mobile phone.’, ‘Please feel free to call me on my mobile phone.’, ‘Are you all right to contact me on my cell phone?’, ‘Why don't you try my cell phone?’이라고 표현한다. 이에 대한 응답으로는 ‘I'll call back later.’와 같이 말한다. 그리고 핸드폰은 무선으로 연결되기 때문에 여러가지 기능 장애가 일어날 수 있는 데 이에 대한 표현으로는 ‘You’re breaking up.’, ‘If the phone is cut, I'll get back to you.’, ‘I'm not getting any reception on my mobile phone.’, ‘My cell phone is not working properly.’, ‘There is a problem with my cell phone.’라고 말한다. 또한 핸드폰은 개인 전화이기 때문에 전화를 받지 않는 것은 실례가 될 수 있어서 가능한 응답 전화 (return call)을 해 주는 것이 좋다. 이와 관련된 표현으로는 ‘Why didn't you return my call?’, ‘Why didn't you answer my phone call?’, ‘Your phone was busy when I called.’, ‘I screen my calls.’이 있다. 핸드폰 통화와 관련된 내용으로 상대방에게 자신의 통화 내용을 확인하는 표현은 ‘Are you still with me?’, 핸드폰을 받지 못한 상황으로 핸드폰이 진동모드나 무음 모드인 경우를 나타내는 표현은 ‘My cellular phone is in a vibration mode.’, ‘My cell phone is in a silent mode.’라고 말하며, 문자 메시지에 대한 표현은 ‘Did you catch my text message?’, ‘I sent the text message to you yesterday.’와 같이 말한다. 이밖에 핸드폰 자체에 대한 표현으로는 ‘The batteries seem to have gone out in my phone.’, ‘I’ve to recharge my cell phone.’, ‘My phone has many features.’, ‘My cell phone is always on my person.’, ‘I would play games on this cell phone.’등이 있다.
