1. abandon

1) abandon은 주로 계획(plan), 활동(activity), 시도(attempt) 등을 포기할 때 쓴다.

2) abolish는 법률(law)이나 전통(tradition), 체제(system) 등을 없앨 때는 쓴다.

■ Since capital punishment was abandoned, the crime rate has increased.(*)

■ Since capital punishment was abolished, the crime rate has increased.

 

 

2. ability

1) '무엇을 할 능력'이라고 쓰려면 즉 ability 다음에 to 부정사를 쓰지 of -ing를 쓰지 않는다.

■ These machines are destroying our ability of thinking.(*)

■ These machines are destroying our ability to think.

 

2) ability 다음에 -ing가 올 경우 of를 쓰고 그 뒤에 -ing를 쓰지 않고 주로 ability앞에 -ing를 쓴다. reading, writing, teaching, acting ability 처럼 쓴다.

■ I want to improve my ability of reading.(*)

■ I want to improve my reading ability.

 

3) 언어나 과목에 대한 능력을 나타낼 때는 of를 쓰지 않고 in을 사용한다.

■ I want to improve my ability of English.(*)

■ I want to improve my ability in English.

■ She demonstrated considerable ability in both maths and chemistry.
