Jason: Wow! How am I going to pass on this bad news?

Lisa: I don’t know. But we have to tell her. Let’s just bite the bullet.

Jason: Hey, Sophie! We have some bad news to tell you.

Sophie: Oh, no! Hopefully it’s not what I think it is.

Jason: Unfortunately, it is! You failed the test.

Sophie: Really? That’s just terrible.

Jason: 아이고! 어떻게 이 안 좋은 소식을 전달하지?

Lisa: 나도 모르겠어. 하지만 얘기는 해 줘야지. 그냥 눈 질끈 감고 말하자.

■ pass on ~: (말, 소식)을 전달하다, 알려주다

*How am I going to inform ~. = How am I going to pass on ~.

■ tell someone: 누구에게 말하다

*tell 뒤에 전치사 on 이 오면 ‘고자질 하다’라는 의미로 완전히 바뀐다.

ex. Don’t tell on her!: 그녀에게 고자질 하지 마!

ex. Don’t tell on the teacher!: 선생님께 말씀 드리지 마!

■ bite the bullet: 고통을 참다, 꾹 참고 ~하다

*세계 2차 대전 당시 수술을 할 때 소독과 마취를 따로 하지 않고 총알을 물고 수술을 한 것에서 유래된 표현이다.

■ I have bad news to tell you.: 네게 전할 안 좋은 소식이 있어.

■ hopefully it’s not what I think it is: 자신이 예상한 것과 다를 경우, 그러질 않기를 바라면서 사용하는 표현이다.

■ fail: 실패하다, (시험에) 떨어지다

*pass the test: 시험에 통과하다

■ terrible: 심한, 괴로운, 불쾌한, 서투른, 형편없는

*일상생활에서 많은 의미로 자주 사용한다.

Lisa: Cheer up, Sophie! It’s not the end of the world.

Sophie: Well, thanks, it’s easy for you to say. You’ve got an A+.
